Love on the Road

Falling in love on the road is easy. I’ve been there and I’m sure you have too.

Why is it so easy to fall in love on the road?

Maybe it’s because travel gives us the opportunity to share intense, intimate, exhilarating and emotional experiences with fascinating people.

When we travel our senses are heightened and our barriers are lowered. We meet kindred spirits who share our dreams, passions, curiosity and sense of adventure. Add to that a dose of chemistry and some physical attraction and who wouldn’t fall in love?

So what to do when the journey ends?

I’m still learning, but this is what I know about love on the road.

It is real

Of course it’s real! We feel it, that makes it real.

As human beings we all have an immense capacity to give and receive love. Who cares if you’ve only known him or her for a month, a week or even a day. Sharing a deep physical, emotional or spiritual connection with someone is real.

It rarely lasts

Love on the road rarely lasts much beyond the next airplane journey. That doesn’t make it any less special, or any less real for that matter. It also doesn’t stop the wanting, wishing and clinging to the hope of turning a short, exciting travel love affair into something beautiful and long-lasting.

But usually at some point, real life takes over. One or other of you has to go home or move on to the next destination, and the reality of distance kicks in. Long distance relationships are hard. Harder still is taking a decision to pack up life as you know it and give up everything for an uncertain life in foreign lands with your new bae.

You will get over him or her

And here’s how. Book a flight, plan an adventure and go out and live your life.

Social Media rocks

Even when it’s not practical or realistic to continue a love affair after the sun sets on an adventure or destination, there’s no need to lose contact altogether with that special someone.

Social media makes it so easy to stay in touch, check in with each other now and again and momentarily re-live the memories of a forgotten love from afar. Why else were love-heart emoji’s invented?

Sometimes friends are better than lovers

I’m certainly not immune to wanting, wishing and dreaming of turning love on the road into something long-lasting and beautiful. But sometimes it’s better to choose friendship.

With friends all over the world, hopefully I’ll always have a mate to share a beer with, a buddy with whom to re-live the trials and tribulations of life on the road/beach/mountain, not to mention a place to crash no matter where I am in the world.
